Sarah Dooley Center for Autism receives 2021 Design Award from AIA Richmond

AIA Design Award

When we first began planning our new Sarah Dooley Center for Autism, Odell led a series of charrettes with faculty, parents, and public school partners to make sure we got everything just right for our students. We’re thrilled that AIA Richmond has recognized the transformation of our 1931 school building with a 2021 Design Award!

Designed by Odell and constructed by Daniel & Company Inc., the Sarah Dooley Center’s unique features include:

  • Expanded accessibility with new entrances, ramps, showers, restrooms, and an elevator
  • Enhanced safety features to deescalate behavioral incidents without restraining or isolating students
  • A library and indoor movement room
  • Transparent storage and configurable furniture to increase communication opportunities
  • A clinical suite with an observation room
  • Flexible auditorium space for professional trainings and conferences, with remote teaching technology
Specialized safety and accessibility features cater to individual needs, with thoughtful details that enhance opportunities for student engagement. The new building also expands SDCA’s capacity to 112 students, with the goal of reaching thousands more through partnerships in research and teacher training.
