Autism-Friendly Events Around Richmond, VA For Winter 2018

Inclusive LEGO® & Game Club – Chester

Richmond Area Asperger’s Support Group-Northside

When: Thu, January 11, 2018, 7pm – 9pm
This Meetup repeats on the 2nd Thursday of every month. At our monthly support group meetings, meet with other local adults, parents and children that are dealing with Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism (HFA) and PDD-NOS for support, discussion, education, parent advocacy and adult self-advocacy. (Note: AS adults, children ages 10 and up and parents with children of all ages attend our meetings.) This support group is designed to be a community of Asperger’s adults, and families with Asperger’s children that live in Richmond, Glen Allen and Ashland VA (and surrounding counties). Professionals do not attend meetings except as invited speakers. However, we hope to maintain a list of professionals as a reference for our members.

Richmond Symphony Lollipops Concert

When: Sat, January 20, 2018, 11:00am – 12:30pm
The Richmond Symphony and The School of Richmond Ballet team up to bring you this Gershwin classic. Kids will be mesmerized by the stunning combination of music and dance as they follow the story of Jerry and his adventures in Paris. Location: Carpenter Theatre, 600 E Grace St, Richmond, VA 23219.

Arrive early and join us for a free pre-concert festival, featuring our instrument petting zoo and enjoy interactive activities for the whole family that will enhance your concert experience. Pre-concert festivities begin at 10am in Rhythm Hall. LolliPops concerts are ideal for children ages 5 and up, but music lovers of all ages are welcome. Sensory Friendly Sunday

During this event, televisions and music will be turned off and the game volume will be turned down. A breakfast buffet will be available and food and activity pages are available. Autism Family Swim

The Autism Society of Central Virginia and the Manchester Family YMCA invite families to enjoy open swim! This is a lifeguarded activity where children can play and explore in the water. Deej Movie Screening

Join us for a FREE movie screening of Deej – a documentary about autism and inclusion. This film is directed by Robert Rooy,and produced by Robert Rooy and DJ “Deej” Savarese. DJ Savarese”Deej” is a gifted, young writer and advocate for non-speaking individuals with autism. Once a profoundly disabled foster kid on a fast track to nowhere, DJ dreams of college and insists on standing up for his peers- people who are dismissed as incompetent because they have neurological differences. A non-speaking young man dreams of autistic civil rights.With its insider view of autism, Deej challenges us all to live inclusion. Autism Society 10th Annual Recreation Resource Fair

Join us for our 10th Annual Recreation Resource Fair!Over 25 exhibitors that provide social and/or recreational opportunities for children, youth, or adults with autism spectrum disorder will be onsite to share information about their programs and answer any questions you may have! Come learn about opportunities for camps, social groups, music, dance, martial arts, soccer, sailing, swimming, gymnastics, and much more! This event is free and open to the community.

Richmond Symphony Lollipops Concert

The Richmond Symphony will tell the story of Peter and the Wolf. Boys like Peter are not afraid of wolves! Prokofiev’s timeless tale of boy vs. wolf comes to life in Really Inventive Stuff’s signature performance. This concert is a perfect introduction to music and the instruments of the orchestra.
